Cooling System

The E9 requires active cooling in order to maintain safe operation. This is achieved through the use of various radiators and fans, which form two separate cooling systems internal to the camera. The main system is responsible for the bulk of the cooling demands. A smaller secondary system provides airflow to the SSD exclusively.

Main System

Cool (ambient) air is brought into the camera from the intake found on the left side of the camera and is exhausted via the large single fan on the right. This fan is speed-controlled based upon the actively-monitored components of the camera. It is responsible for cooling both the sensor and main stack electronics. The large copper radiator found under the intake vent is for cooling the sensor and it’s corresponding electronics. This receives air first, and then air is drawn across the camera’s main stack.

warning

WARNING: Do not operate an E9 with a disabled, damaged, or removed main cooling fan. Damage to the camera can occur. This will void the camera’s warranty.

warning

WARNING: Do not operate an E9 with an obstructed intake or exhaust vent. Damage to the camera can occur. This will void the camera’s warranty.

SSD Fans

At the rear-left of the camera, under the intake vent, two smaller fans can be found that are exclusively tasked to cool an inserted SSD drive. Like the main system, air is drawn in from the left and is exhausted through the SSD door found on the right. These fans will be powered down if an SSD drive is not present, or an SSD is ejected from the camera via the SLOW software (not necessarily physically removed).

Maintenance

From time to time, depending on the operating conditions of the camera, it may be necessary to clean the cooling system or replace the fans. Replacement fans are available from Pharsighted.
